Mumbai: After reviewing the security of Mohammed Kasab at the Arthur Road Jail here, Mumbai Police has moved a proposal to the Maharashtra government requesting that the Pakistani terrorist be shifted to Pune’s Yerwada jail, the biggest prison in the state.

“A proposal in this regard (shifting of Kasab to Yerwada jail) has been under consideration and it has been sent to the state government,” Joint Police Commissioner Himanshu Roy (Crime Branch) said.

Kasab, who was sentenced to death for the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks, is lodged in solitary confinement in an egg-shaped cell at the high security Arthur Road Jail in the city.

Police and the state government are now waiting for the Bombay High Court confirmation on Kasab’s conviction after which he is likely to be shifted to Yerwada jail due to security reasons, police said.

While Arthur Road jail is spread over two acres land in the heart of the city, with several criminals linked to the underworld lodged in it, Pune’s Yerwada is the largest jail in the state which already has an egg-shaped cell and extra measures need to be taken in case Kasab is shifted there, police said.

Kasab was the only terrorist caught alive during the 26/11 attacks, in which 166 people were killed.
